George Peppard told his crack team of delinquent good guy soldiers, and the bad guys for that matter, at the end of nearly every episode of the A-Team that he “loves it when a plan comes together.”
So do I. This morning, I had the honor of calling a pair of gobblers in for my father on a property I hunt outside of Edgefield. He dosed one of them with a 3-inch #5 Winchester Xtended Range from my 20-gauge 870 Remington. We’ve killed turkeys together before, but this is the first time I’ve called a bird in for him, and it was particularly satisfying to share the experience with him.
But the hunt is just a small part of the “plan that came together.” I’ve hunted the property for three years with some success, but when I started hunting there, the property was dog hair thick and had few wildlife openings.
We’ve started a very regimented land management practice and it really paid off. So far we’ve burned the lease with prescribed fire (a third each year for three years), cut some timber and quadrupled the open ground for food plots/wildlife openings.
We’re using many of the land management practices NWTF recommends on that particular property, check this link to learn more www.nwtf.org/conservation/land_management.html
Stay tuned for more on this property, after seeing the turkey population turn around on the land, I’m a true believer in active land management.
Happy Hunting,
Brian
