Families Afield
Families Afield VictoriesWest Virginia created an apprentice hunting license which allows new hunters to go afield with a licensed hunter ages 18 or older for up to three years before being required to complete West Virginia's hunter's education course. Idaho passed legislation to allow the state's fish and game commission to establish a mentored hunting program, which allows newcomers to try hunting under the watchful eye of an experienced mentor prior to the completion of a hunter education course. Michigan eliminated the state's arbitrary minimum hunting age and created a new mentored youth hunting program. Young hunters are responding with optimism and have bought more than 78,000 apprentice licenses, which makes Michigan second only to Pennsylvania in the number of licenses sold. |
Getting more youth involved in hunting remains a key component of the NWTF's mission. Through the Families Afield initiative, the NWTF and our partners give more youth a chance to carry on America's time honored hunting traditions.
The NWTF has teamed up with the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance and the National Shooting Sports Foundation to strike down barriers to youth hunting since 2004.
Over 782,000 New Hunters!
