Local youth wins NWTF scholarships

Darla Simons of North Augusta, S.C., was recently presented with two $1,000 scholarships, one from the South Carolina State Chapter and one from the Edgefield Local Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, during the awards banquet at Strom Thurmond High School, Monday, May 3, 2004.

The scholarships are set up to benefit youth with a commitment to conserving the wild turkey and preserving the hunting tradition. The scholarship program is part of the NWTF's Five-Star program. Applicants for the scholarships are judged on their scholastic achievements, leadership abilities and community involvement.

The winners of the local chapter scholarship are eligible for consideration of the state award of $1,000 and finally, state winners are eligible for the NWTF's national scholarship of $10,000.

To date, the NWTF has awarded over $1 million through the scholarship program.

"Supporting our children's education is just one way the NWTF can ensure we have the dedicated conservationists needed for the future," said NWTF CEO Rob Keck.
