Why You Should Join the NWTF
When the NWTF was first founded in 1973, there were only 1.5 million wild turkeys across the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Today, there are more than 7 million wild turkeys. At the forefront of this dramatic return has been the Federation's volunteers, working side-by-side with game agency personnel and supported financially by private and corporate contributions. It is considered by many to be one of the biggest conservation success stories of the 20th century. Now, with many restocking efforts completed in the East, eyes have turned to the West, where the wild turkey continues to redefine its own idea of suitable habitat. And while the release of a transplanted turkey into the wild has become one of the Federation's most enduring symbols, it is just one brick in a foundation of good works that are impacting people's lives and the environment in very positive ways. Through the Federation's regional habitat programs, NWTF volunteers have improved more than 9 million acres of land by planting trees, crops and grasses that provide food and shelter for not only wild turkeys, but many species of game and non-game wildlife. They have also improved the water quality in many of these areas, particularly in the arid West, where volunteers and partners have helped provide permanent water solutions for the wildlife of the region. In our never-ending effort to share the wonder of the outdoors and the character-building qualities of hunting to an ever-greater audience, the NWTF's outreach programs - Women in the Outdoors, JAKES, Xtreme JAKES and Wheelin' Sportsmen - are reaching nontraditional audiences like no other conservation family can. Through our JAKES program, children are learning to safely and responsibly hunt, fish, camp and become wise stewards of our natural resources. Women in the Outdoors is helping women learn the joy of archery, outdoor photography and countless other outdoor pursuits in a way that keeps them coming back for more and sharing the experiences with their friends and family. And disabled individuals, some who once enjoyed excursions afield and others who have only dreamed of them, are finally getting that chance. Through Wheelin' Sportsmen, they are breaking down the barriers that have prevented them from experiencing our natural world in a way all people should be able to enjoy. With more than 2,250 chapters across the U.S. and Canada, it's a good bet the NWTF is at work in your community. Now is your chance to make new friends as you become part of the fastest-growing conservation family today. Become a member of the NWTF today and start helping us conserve our natural resources, preserve the outdoor lifestyle and make a difference in someone's life. You'll be glad you joined the flock.
