Help Preserve Historic Belfast Plantation
Make More Places to Hunt in the Piedmont
The National Wild Turkey Federation, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the South Carolina Conservation Bank and The Conservation Fund are joining forces to help purchase and conserve the historic Belfast Plantation. Located along Highway 56 in Laurens and Newberry Counties, this 4,664-acre plantation is easily accessible from the mountains or the coast. Conservation of this Piedmont treasure will provide the citizens of South Carolina a wealth of outdoor recreation opportunities as part of SCDNR's Wildlife Management Area and Heritage Trust Programs. With your help we can achieve our goal of raising $100,000 in one evening towards the conservation of this great resource.
About the Property
The Belfast Plantation is a unique and historic property located between the Enoree and Long Cane Ranger Districts of the Sumter National Forest and represents one of the largest blocks of forestland in the Piedmont. Belfast has a well-stocked forest that has been under active timber management. Acquisition of this tract will help link the national forest districts with quality wildlife habitat and will ensure the continuation of wildlife and timber management of the tract and support the local timber markets.
The property supports thriving populations of white-tailed deer, wild turkey and small game and a variety of non-game animals and has been a demonstration area for quail management. In addition, the tract provides over 20 miles of protection to both the Little River and Mudlick Creek which flow into the Saluda River.
Acquisition of the property includes the Belfast Plantation house which was constructed in the early 1800's and is one of the oldest structures in Laurens County. SCDNR plans to partner with local historical organizations to preserve and provide interpretive opportunities for this piece of history.
Program Opportunities
The Belfast acquisition provides the ideal opportunity for SCDNR to increase public recreation and education opportunities in the Piedmont. The property will become part of the Wildlife Management Area program and be open to the public for traditional outdoor recreation opportunities.
Available public activities include:
- Hunting
- Shooting sports
- Nature walking
- Bicycling
- Bird watching
In addition, the South Carolina Department of Education and the NWTF have expressed interest in working with SCDNR to implement a comprehensive education program centered on hunting, fishing, boating, kayaking, etc. Belfast provides an ideal location to create outdoor classroom opportunities for students in the Piedmont and Midlands of South Carolina.
