Chufa is Turkey Gold

Before Planting Turkey Gold Chufa:

  • Test the soil and add the recommended amounts of lime and/or fertilizer.

  • Broadcast chufa at a rate of 40 to 50 pounds per acre.

  • Cover the seeds 1 to 1 1/2 inches deep with a harrow.

There is no magic trick for keeping wild turkeys in any area, but the right food supply can make a huge difference in your spring turkey hunts.

Wild turkeys, like any wildlife, will roam in search of food until they find it. By planting the National Wild Turkey Federation's Turkey Gold® Chufa, you can increase the odds of keeping turkeys on your property or hunt club year round.

"Chufa is the best food source to keep turkeys concentrated on your property, and the NWTF's Turkey Gold® Chufa always produces a great crop," said Michael Waddell, NWTF spokesman.

Chufa is a plant that produces an underground tuber turkeys relish, and grows in most places that are capable of growing corn. Turkey Gold® Chufa provides exceptional results that will attract both turkeys and ducks.

"Wild turkeys begin scratching for chufa during the fall, after the foliage above ground has turned brown," said James Earl Kennamer, Ph.D., the NWTF's chief conservation officer. "They will continue to feed on chufa until it's gone, which is usually late spring."

When to Plant
Chufa can grow in almost any temperate climate and is typically planted at the same time as corn. In the South, chufa is planted from April through July. In colder climates, it is planted in June. Chufa can grow in a variety of soil types, but does best in moderately- to well-drained sandy or loamy soils.

Weed Control
Controlling weeds in chufa is critical for its success. The best way to prevent weeds from competing with chufa is with herbicides. Contact your local extension office or wildlife biologist for herbicide recommendations.
