Lance Hanger called his way to the winner's circle during the NWTF Grand National Intermediate Turkey Calling Championships, inching out Joel Parker by a mere three points. The 16-year-old from Churchville, Va., competed for the first time Friday in the intermediate division. As a junior caller, he closed out his career with a bang, upsetting three-peat champion Dakota Clouser, of Danville, Pa.

Young callers must master the slate, diaphragm and box turkey calls if they hope to place in the championships.

Contestants compete in one of two divisions: intermediate and junior. The intermediate division is for callers 16 to 20 years old; the junior division is for callers 15 and younger. The types of calls contestants must imitate are not announced until the day before the competition, so participants must prepare for several different calls.

The top five finishers were:

Lance Hanger, Churchville, Va. 426

Joel Parker, Clarksville, Tenn. 423

Kindell Keeton, Wilmington, Ohio 420

Aaron Warbritton, Paris, Ohio 404

Shawn Boyer, Morrilton, Ark. 402
