FORSYTH, Ga.— Bill McGuire of Charleston, Tenn., was the high overall shooter out of 600 competitors at the National Wild Turkey Federation's 14th annual Turkey Shoot sporting clays competition in Forsyth, Ga., Aug. 17 to Aug. 19.
The Turkey Shoot, shot at the Meadows National Gun Club, is one of the largest sporting clays tournaments in the nation. McGuire won the National Sporting Clays Association division of the Main Event by breaking 182 out of 200 clays.
"I've always wanted to win this shoot," said McGuire. "I've been close before and I've even been runner-up, but it feels good to win."
In the Hunter division of the Main Event, Barry Zuckerman of Roswell, Ga., won first place with an impressive round of 159 out of 200.
"I've been shooting at the Turkey Shoot for the past seven years," said Zuckerman. "I've placed in the top 10 for a number of years, but never won. This was finally my day in the barrel."
The Turkey Shoot is separated into two divisions — the highly competitive National Sporting Clays Association Class for professional shooters and the Hunter Class for recreational shooters.
While participants competed for $100,000 in cash and prizes in a number of shooting events, many people tried to hit the mark through raffles. For a donation, participants could enter to win a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe.
Chevrolet, partner and official vehicle of the NWTF, generously donated a 2008 Chevy Tahoe. The Tahoe delivers plenty of power to get the lucky winner back and forth to their favorite hunting spots and future NWTF events.
"The Turkey Shoot continues to grow each year in prestige and size," said Rhett Simmons, NWTF special events coordinator. "The best sporting clay shooters participate because it's tough and fun. It's the perfect opportunity for them to cash in on some great shooting competition."
Proceeds from the 2007 Turkey Shoot benefit Wheelin' Sportsmen NWTF, an outreach program that provides people with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors through NWTF chapter events nationwide.
