EDGEFIELD, S.C. — When the smoke cleared after two days of competition at The Outdoor Connection, Inc., World Wild Turkey Championships, two new world records were set and six people could claim to be champions.

Brian Sloan shot a new world record during the Black Powder finals by shooting a score of 32, and immediately after that Steve Conover broke that record with a score of 33. However, Sloan still won the first ever Black Powder division at the Still Target Championships.

Competitors are judged on their expertise and the ability of their equipment to accurately shoot at stationary targets exactly 40 yards away. Winners are determined by the number of pellets shot into a three-inch circle.

Participants fired more than 1,000 shots during the event held at the National Wild Turkey Federation's headquarters in Edgefield, S.C., Oct. 5th and 6th.

"Every year, the Still Target Championships gets better," said Rhett Simmons, NWTF special events coordinator. "We had the best shooters competing to determine who makes the best shotguns, choke tubes and ammunition loads for turkey hunting, and who has the steadiest aim when shooting under pressure."

Originally known as a "turkey shoot," the NWTF's Still Target Championships was conceived 16 years ago as a conservation effort to help turkey hunters better understand point of aim and point of impact of their turkey guns.

"We had the idea to have a competition that would help turkey hunters become more effective with their turkey guns," said Rob Keck, NWTF CEO. "The ultimate goal of the competition is to reduce crippling loss and misses in the field, but it's also a great way for equipment manufacturers to improve their turkey hunting products."

The Outdoor Connection Inc., World Wild Turkey Championships is still used to sharpen turkey hunting skills, but it's also used by manufacturers to unveil new ammunition loads, choke tubes and sights to hunters. The Still Target Championships is also used as a fundraiser for Wheelin' Sportsmen NWTF.

Wheelin' Sportsmen NWTF is an outreach program that provides individuals with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors through NWTF chapter events featuring hunting, fishing and shooting activities.
