NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Making Tracks With The Forest Service Awards recognize people and projects that best incorporate conservation education, partnerships and wild turkey management.
The awards are presented annually at the National Wild Turkey Federation's annual convention to people and projects that accomplish the NWTF's mission by significantly improving habitat for wild turkeys and other wildlife species.
This year, the NWTF's 35th annual National Convention and Sport Show is taking place in Nashville through Feb. 20 with MidwayUSA as the official sponsor.
The Group Habitat Management Program category recognizes program accomplishments that benefit wild turkeys for several years.
The Baldwin/St. Cloud Ranger District, Huron Manistee National Forest, in Michigan earned the Group Habitat Management Award for their continued commitment to restoring the savannah and habitat for the Karner blue butterfly, which is endangered.
The district works with new and existing partnerships to collect data, analyze and manage savannah restoration and conserve Karner blue butterflies.
In 2010, the district signed an agreement with the NWTF to improve 377 acres of savannah restoration and arrange for planting more than 25 acres in six Karner blue butterfly sites. They monitored 869 acres of Karner blue butterfly habitat in 2010, dramatically improving their understanding of the species.
The Big Piney Ranger District, Ozark National Forest, in Arkansas earned the Group Habitat Management Project Award for their continued management of wild turkey habitat.
The Bearcat Hollow Project is a prime area to restore fire-adapted ecosystems and improve habitat for wild turkey, elk, deer, quail and other plant and animal species. This work is primarily restoring oak woodlands and establishing hundreds of acres of wildlife openings and several woodland ponds.
In the second year of a multi-year project, partners have contributed more than $140,000 dollars and helped establish 127 acres of permanent wildlife openings; eight woodland ponds; 367 acres of oak woodlands; and completed 165 acres of non-native species control.
The Partnership Achievement category recognizes accomplishments in strengthening and expanding the partnership between the USDA Forest Service and the NWTF.
The National Forests of Florida received the Partnership Achievement Program Award.
The U.S. Forest Service and the NWTF are involved in several cooperative endeavors including stewardship, NWTF Hunting Heritage Super Fund habitat and Energy for Wildlife projects, and grant projects like More Kids in the Woods, for the past five years.
Accomplishments since 2006 include cooperative agreements worth more than $509,000; stewardship of 4,100 acres; 1,800 acres of Hunting Heritage Super Fund projects, Energy for Wildlife projects treating 1,150 acres, and a More Kids in the Woods project that reached more than 1,000 young hunters.
The NWTF is a nonprofit conservation organization that works daily to further its mission of conserving the wild turkey and preserving our hunting heritage. Through dynamic partnerships with state, federal and provincial wildlife agencies, the NWTF and its members have helped restore wild turkey populations across the country, spending more than $331 million to conserve 15.9 million acres of habitat for all types of wildlife.
