NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A disability or mobility impairment can make it difficult for someone to enjoy a peaceful afternoon of hunting or fishing. But with the help of a dedicated friend or two, anything is possible.
That's the message members of the Mississippi State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation have spread throughout their community. For helping provide opportunities for people with disabilities to enjoy hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities through the NWTF's Wheelin' Sportsmen outreach program, the chapter won a prestigious national award.
The chapter won the Best State Chapter Event Award at the 35th annual NWTF National Convention and Sport Show Feb. 18 in Nashville. MidwayUSA is the official convention sponsor.
Wheelin' Sportsmen provides people with disabilities opportunities to enjoy the outdoors through local chapter events throughout North America. Whether it's shooting, hunting, fishing or archery, there is no limit to the outdoor opportunities Wheelin' Sportsmen can offer people with disabilities who are eager to get outside and live an active lifestyle.
"The members of the Mississippi State Chapter have gone out of their way to help their neighbors and fellow sportsmen enjoy the woods and water in their area," said Illana Burkhart, Wheelin' Sportsmen coordinator. "The chapter is a shining example for others who want to preserve our hunting heritage by involving as many people as possible in the outdoors."
The NWTF annually hosts more than 300 Wheelin' Sportsmen events across North America where volunteers help more than 8,000 people with disabilities enjoy hunting, fishing, shooting and other outdoor activities.
Founded in 1973, the NWTF is dedicated to the conservation of the wild turkey and the preservation of our hunting heritage.
Through dynamic partnerships with state, federal and provincial wildlife agencies, the NWTF and its members have helped restore wild turkey populations across the country, spending more than $331 million to conserve 15.9 million acres of habitat for all types of wildlife.
The NWTF works to increase interest in the outdoors by bringing new hunters and conservationists into the fold through outdoor education events and its outreach programs - Women in the Outdoors, Wheelin' Sportsmen, JAKES and Xtreme JAKES.
