NASHVILLE, Tenn. —Conservation Enforcement Officer William Bryan Fisher of Eldridge, Ala., was named the NWTF’s 2012 National Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Feb. 11 at the NWTF National Convention and Sport Show at Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center.
Fisher, assigned to Walker County by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division since 2006, also won the NWTF’s Alabama State Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award.
Fisher has made more than 1,000 game and fish arrests, including 35 on wild turkey-related charges, and issued 193 warnings.
"I'm grateful that people appreciate my work," said Fisher. "I do everything I can to help people with their problems because I grew up with those problems. I guess I'll have to keep doing it."
Capt. Johnny Johnson, who nominated Fisher for the NWTF national award, cited character, integrity, professionalism and work ethic among Fisher’s strengths. During his tenure, Fisher arrested a fellow ADCNR employee and several prominent local people for hunting turkey illegally by using bait. The accused were convicted.
“Bryan is uncompromising in his position and treats everyone with respect and fairness, but shows no mercy for poachers and violators,” Johnson said. “He works diligently to protect the wild turkey and all natural resources of this great state, and is very deserving of this prestigious award.”
An active member of NWTF, Fisher is an accomplished hunter and participates in several community and ADNCR outreach programs.
“We’re proud to honor Officer Fisher with this award,” said George C. Thornton, NWTF CEO. “His dedication to upholding our game laws is truly impressive. Wildlife officers such as Officer Fisher are essential front-line protectors of wildlife. We thank him for his outstanding service.”
The NWTF, the leader in upland wildlife habitat conservation in North America, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of the wild turkey and the preservation of our hunting heritage.
Through dynamic partnerships with state, federal and provincial wildlife agencies, the NWTF and its members have helped restore wild turkey populations throughout North America, spending more than $372 million to conserve almost 17 million acres of habitat for wildlife.
