NASHVILLE, Tenn. — NWTF chapters in Illinois claimed L.A. Dixon Memorial Chapter Awards Feb. 11 at the NWTF Convention and Sport Show at Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville, Tenn.

The annual L.A. Dixon awards recognize local, state and provincial chapters that lead in conservation fund raising, education and outreach events.

Illinois chapters recognized for their outstanding work in 2011 included:

  • The Illinois State Chapter was recognized by the NWTF as the Best State Chapter with 10,000 to 19,999 members.
  • The Randolph County Cutters & Strutters, headquartered in Vansant, Ill., were recognized for winning two national awards: Outstanding First Banquet - Highest Membership Total and Outstanding First Banquet - Highest Net.
  • The Little Wabash Longbeards, headquartered in Watson, Ill., were recognized for finishing second in the nation in the Best Net/Net division and taking third in the nation in Best of the Best Local Chapter division and the Greatest Net Income division.
  • The Big Bend Longbeards, headquartered in Prophetstown, Ill., earned second place for in the Total Sponsor Membership Achievement category.

"Considering all the great work completed by NWTF chapters, winning an L.A. Dixon award is an extraordinary achievement," said George Thornton, NWTF CEO. "The NWTF is blessed to have such a strong corps of volunteers dedicated to conservation and the preservation of our hunting heritage."

The L.A. Dixon awards are named in honor of the NWTF's North Carolina State Chapter founder, who traveled throughout the country at his own expense spreading the NWTF message.

NWTF chapters hold more than 2,000 Hunting Heritage Super Fund banquets each year to raise funds for NWTF conservation and outreach initiatives nationwide.

Founded in 1973, the NWTF is dedicated to the conservation of the wild turkey and the preservation of our hunting heritage.

Through dynamic partnerships with state, federal and provincial wildlife agencies, the NWTF and its members have achieved a great success in restoring wild turkey populations throughout the United States, spending more than $372 million to conserve 17 million acres of habitat for all types of wildlife.
