NASHVILLE, Tenn.— For conveying the social and conservation importance of hunting to a broad audience, author and TV show host Steven Rinella earned the 2013 NWTF Communicator of the Year Award.

The New York resident accepted the award at the 38th annual NWTF National Convention and Sport Show. MidwayUSA was the official show sponsor.

"There are social and political threats to hunting, but they all pale in comparison to habitat threats," Rinella said. "Habitat loss is the existential threat that keeps me up at night. I'm proud to receive an award from NWTF, but I feel like NWTF deserves an award for all they do to conserve habitat and preserve hunting. Every day I get to enjoy the outdoors is an award."

The NWTF determined this year's award winners based on how their work strengthens the organization's new Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt. initiative. Rinella is a tremendous outdoor communicator and one of the best at helping the non-hunting public understand the value of hunting and why it is critical to protect this way of life. His efforts directly support the NWTF's Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt. initiative.

Rinella hosts "MeatEater" on The Sportsman Channel, and has highlighted the NWTF in the show's conservation segments. He also authored a story published in the March 2013 edition of "Field and Stream," based on a hunt arranged by the NWTF. His story prominently featured the organization.

The well-respected author has published three books: "The Scavenger's Guide to Haute Cuisine," "American Buffalo: In Search of a Lost Icon" and "Meat Eater: Adventures from the Life of an American Hunter." He also has written outdoor stories for a range of non-hunting publications including "Glamour," "Men's Journal," "The New Yorker," "O, The Oprah Magazine," Salon.com and The New York Times.

Past NWTF Communicator of the Year Award recipients include: Tom Fegely, Ron Schara, J. Wayne Fears, Grits Gresham, Jim Zumbo, Jim Casada, Glenn Sapir, Col. Tom Kelly, Ronnie "Cuz' Strickland, Kevin Howard and Ray Eye.

The NWTF's Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt. initiative is a charge that mobilizes science, fundraising and devoted volunteers to give the NWTF more energy and purpose than ever. Through this national initiative, NWTF has committed to raising $1.2 billion to conserve and enhance more than 4 million acres of essential upland wildlife habitat, create at least 1.5 million new hunters and open access to 500,000 new acres for hunting, shooting and outdoor enjoyment. Without hunters, there will be no wildlife or habitat. The NWTF is determined to Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt.
