NASHVILLE, Tenn. — National Wild Turkey Federation chapters in South Carolina received L.A. Dixon Memorial Chapter Awards during the NWTF's 35th annual National Convention and Sport Show in Nashville, Tenn.
MidwayUSA was the official convention sponsor.
The L.A. Dixon awards are given to local, state and provincial chapters that excel at conservation fund raising, education and outreach events year-round. The following chapters from South Carolina earned L.A. Dixon Awards for their outstanding work in 2010.
The South Carolina State Chapter was recognized by the NWTF for winning first place in the membership achievement category for state chapters with 5,000 to 9,999 members.
The Orangeburg Chapter, headquartered in Orangeburg, S.C., was recognized by the NWTF for earning second place in the Total Sponsor Membership Achievement category.
The Swamp Fox Local Chapter, headquartered in Ladson, S.C., was recognized by the NWTF for earning second place in the Greatest Net Income category and third place in the Best Net/Net category for their fundraising efforts.
The Salkehatchie Longbeards Chapter, headquartered in Walterboro, S.C., was recognized by the NWTF for earning third place in the Best of the Best Local Chapter category.
"We are proud to recognize these outstanding chapters with the L.A. Dixon Awards," said George Thornton, NWTF CEO. "The NWTF's volunteers and chapters are incredibly devoted to our mission of conservation and the preservation of our hunting heritage. These outstanding chapters are shining examples of how our great volunteers lead the way in communities across North America."
The L.A. Dixon Memorial awards are bestowed in honor of a man who gave unselfishly during the NWTF's early years. Dixon founded the North Carolina State NWTF chapter, served at the national, state and local levels and traveled thousands of miles at his own expense carrying the NWTF's message to all who would listen. The NWTF honors Dixon's achievements through the L.A. Dixon Memorial Chapter Awards.
Last year, NWTF chapters hosted more than 2,000 Hunting Heritage Super Fund banquets to raise funds for the NWTF's conservation and outreach initiatives. Dollars raised at these events help fund conservation and outreach projects nationwide through the NWTF Hunting Heritage Super Fund.
Through dynamic partnerships with state, federal and provincial wildlife agencies, the NWTF and its members have helped restore wild turkey populations across the country, spending more than $331 million to conserve 15.9 million acres of habitat that helps wild turkeys and hundreds of upland wildlife species including deer, quail, grouse and pheasants.
