NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Southern Company (NYSE:SO), known for its commitment to the environment and wildlife, received the NWTF’s Corporate Achievement Award during the NWTF’s National Convention and Sport Show.

Presented annually by the NWTF, the Corporate Achievement Award recognizes the outstanding work and dedication corporate partners have displayed in conserving wildlife, habitat and other natural resources.

Southern Company’s environmental stewardship programs focus on collaborative partnerships to conserve habitat and wildlife, educate children, provide recreation, remove trash, develop communities and accomplish other services. In addition to funding projects, employees of Southern Company and its subsidiaries actively take part in many conservation efforts.

Two of the company’s most impactful programs are Power of Flight and Longleaf Legacy, managed in partnership with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

Power of Flight funds efforts to conserve bird species characteristic of the southern U.S. through strategic habitat restoration and environmental education. Longleaf Legacy helps restore the South’s stately longleaf pine ecosystem.

The NWTF has been awarded many grants to support habitat work on public and private lands, with more than $2.5 million coming from these programs.

In addition, Southern Company, a Centurion Corporate Life Partner, has been a vital Energy for Wildlife supporter since 2003, helping create and enhance habitats on utility rights of way throughout the Southeast.

“Through their Georgia Power subsidiary, the company created a landowner cooperative program to assist with landowner management of rights of way,” said Jay Jordan, NWTF Energy for Wildlife coordinator. “WINGS (Wildlife Incentive Non-Game Subsidy) has fostered the conversion of nearly 17,000 acres of rights of way to support wildlife since the program’s inception in 1996 and is a model for similar programs nationwide.”

“We are honored to be presented with the Corporate Achievement Award, which recognizes our longstanding partnership with the NWTF and shared commitment to habitat and natural resource conservation,” said Bob Schaffeld, Southern Company vice president of transmission. “Our work with NWTF symbolizes the focus on collaboration that defines Southern Company’s approach to environmental stewardship and enables us to turn this commitment into meaningful, on-the-ground action.”
