The Roost

Where Women in the Outdoors, Wheelin' Sportsmen and JAKES flock for fun and education

Dear Educators:

We are pleased to invite you and your students to enjoy "A Day with the Wild Turkey" at the Gaylord Opryland Convention Center on Thursday, February 18, 2010. This program is part of the National Wild Turkey Federation's (NWTF) 34th Annual Convention and Sport Show.

This is a free program designed to address the Tennessee Life Science Academic Content Standards and introduce you and your students to the world of wildlife through the greatest wildlife conservation success story of all time...the return of the wild turkey! Seating is limited and on a first come first serve basis, so act fast!

To further encourage your attendance the NWTF will reimburse each school for transportation to the program while supplies last. Reimbursement will be on a first come first serve basis.

The NWTF is a national nonprofit conservation and hunting organization that, along with its volunteers, partners and sponsors, has worked for the conservation of the wild turkey and preservation of our hunting heritage. When the NWTF was established in 1973, there were only 1.3 million wild turkeys. Today that number stands at more than seven million birds throughout North America, and hunting seasons have been established in 49 U.S. states, Canada and Mexico.

Growth and progress define the NWTF as it has expanded from 1,300 members in 1973 to more than 350,000 today. With that growth has come impressive strides in wildlife management as the NWTF has forged dynamic partnerships across the country to further its conservation mission. Together, the NWTF's partners, sponsors and grassroots members have raised and spent more than $286 million upholding hunting traditions and conserving nearly 14 million acres of wildlife habitat.

While wild turkey restoration is nearing completion, the NWTF still has much work to do. Across North America, supporters are working to enhance habitat for wild turkeys and other wildlife while providing hunters with more opportunities and access to public and private land. In addition, NWTF volunteers and partners are introducing youth, women and people with disabilities to the outdoors through special educational events.

Now that you know who we are, let me share with you a portion of what we have planned for your student's "Day with the Wild Turkey" on Thursday, February 18, 2010.

During an exciting two-hour session, the students will tentatively:

  • meet a variety of animals from the Nashville Zoo
  • hear a variety of wild game calls, including the wild turkey
  • learn the differences between domestic and wild turkeys
  • learn about the life cycle of wild turkeys
  • understand the importance of wise management and use of our natural resources
  • meet celebrities who want to share their love of the outdoors with young children.

Click here to view a tentative agenda to give you an idea of what to expect. We will have a few surprises in store this year. Children will leave with a JAKES Activity book as a remembrance of their "Day with the Wild Turkey."

Thank you for your support and participation in this special day for the NWTF and your students. We hope you plan to join us for a time of interactive learning made fun. You won't be disappointed! To sign up for "A Day with the Wild Turkey" please click here.

Sincerely,
Kristy Jobe
