This video, featuring a flock of wild turkeys circling a cat, has completely stumped the internet. Proposed explanations ranged from a turkey séance, to being generally jive. Fortunately, our own Mark Hatfield, wildlife biologist, was able to shed some light on the situation.
“They’re just making sure that it’s no longer a threat,” Hatfield said. “It’s more of a curiosity type of thing. Turkeys are very basic.”
Ultimately, it seems to be a case of basic flock mentality, lacking the excitement of the various imagined scenarios.
“It’s a non-story from the biological side of things,” he said. They’ve flocked together on instinct upon seeing the potential predator. “They’re saying that’s a threat, I’m gonna keep my distance and I’m following the flock.”
