Missouri’s New Hunter Recruitment Dove Field Initiative is a cooperative effort between the NWTF, Quail Forever, the Conservation Federation of Missouri, the Missouri Prairie Foundation and the Missouri Department of Conservation.
For the past six years, the collaborative effort has maintained 105 acres of dove fields in 10 Missouri counties. Staff annually seed, fertilize and apply herbicide to each dove field. This has created new dove hunting areas and, as a result, mentors are able to take new hunters on morning and afternoon dove hunts. This program created 96 new hunters in the state of Missouri in 2018 alone.
“What’s really cool about the dove program is you can touch a lot of folks with just one event,” said John Burk, NWTF biologist and project manager. “We can provide them a quality experience…. I’ve personally experienced some pretty special moments where you can see the new hunter being created.”
