BOG DeadShot: Quality Shooting Sticks for a Great Price

A solid set of sticks can surely help provide a suitable rest for those heart-pounding situations when a mature tom comes to your calls in full strut and then gobbles in your face.

In the turkey woods, one could argue that there are very few absolute needs to make it happen on a spring gobbler — a hunting license and tags, a firearm, some shells and maybe a call, but even the last one is up for debate.

All of the other items that we use or tote with us in the woods — camo clothing, vests, decoys, blinds, turkey chairs, Thermacells, and the list goes on — are arguably not needed, but all are meant to enhance the hunt in some form or fashion, help us better adapt to situational needs and simply make the hunt more enjoyable.

One of these more convenience-type items that I sometimes carry with me is a set of shooting sticks. I probably carry them most often when hunting with or assisting kids and other first-time hunters in the spring woods.

A solid set of sticks can surely help provide a suitable rest for those heart-pounding situations when a mature tom comes to your calls in full strut and then gobbles in your face.

But, they can also be nice for those slow mornings when the birds just don’t seem to be talking and you don’t want to put the gun down in case a bird decides to sneak in quietly.

Now the sticks that I sometimes carry are old and bulky, so when our friends at BOG sent over a set of their new DeadShot sticks to test (available in tripod, bipod and monopod versions), I was eager to see what the new line was all about.

For starters, the DeadShot line appears to be a more budget friendly set of sticks, and that is a nice touch in this day and age where costs on everything hunting related seem to be climbing at an exponential rate.

Depending on which set of sticks you choose, monopod up to tripod, the costs are between $29.99 to $59.99. If we are comparing price tags, that is around the cost of a set of five TSS shot shells or even less than a quarter of the cost of some of the brand-new turkey vests launched this spring. So they are fairly easy on the wallet.

All three of the versions are made from mostly aluminum parts for the legs with some plastic components elsewhere on the sticks. But, they appear to all be well made with the tripod version withstanding me putting considerable force and weight on the yoke with legs fully extended and the legs not buckling or bowing.

The DeadShot tripod is noticeably lighter than what I used to carry, as this new model weighs just under 2.5 pounds. For comparison purposes, the DeadShot Monopod comes in at about 14 ounces.

All three versions use the same telescoping legs, providing shooting heights than can range from 25 to 64 inches for sitting to standing shooting positions. And, the overall packed length of the tripod version is just 26.5 inches, keeping things relatively compact.

This kind of versatility means the sticks will probably get use in the deer blinds this fall while hunting with my kids as well.

And finally, the DeadShot sticks all use BOG’s USR rubberized shooting rest providing 360-degree rotation.

Now if you are like me and wonder about the ability to at some point modify the yoke on the tripod version, the answer is no. While it appears the yoke could potentially be replaced if broken, BOG’s website says the “tripod’s yoke is not removeable or compatible with other tripod heads or products. It has a fixed yoke.”

While somewhat of a drawback, keep in mind the low-cost price tag for these models and the fact that modifications are available on other BOG products at higher price points. So, if you think you are going to want more out of your sticks at some point, just spend more up front.

All in all, for $59.99 for the most robust of the three DeadShot models, you really cannot go wrong with this piece of hunting equipment that can enhance your spring, or even fall, pursuits.
