One of the biggest draws for hunters across the country is the incredible selection of turkey calls available. From simple yet effective box calls to handcrafted masterpieces designed for the prestigious Grand National Callmaking Competition, the variety is unmatched.

In addition to the classic calls found in every turkey hunter’s vest — such as box calls, pot calls and mouth calls — there are plenty of unique and specialized calls that catch the attention of dedicated turkey hunters.

Wingbone Calls: A Timeless Tradition

Among the standout calls on the show floor were wingbone calls, a traditional tool that dates back to the earliest days of turkey hunting. Originally used by Native Americans, these calls are crafted from the wing bones of a turkey, producing a sound that has stood the test of time.

Mike Allen of Quaker Boy Turkey Calls shared his thoughts on using the wingbone call in the field.

“I use all calls, but I like to use wingbones towards the end of turkey season here in Tennessee,” Allen said. “It’s different everywhere, but that’s what works for me.”

Trumpet Calls: A Unique Edge in the Turkey Woods

Another intriguing call on display was the trumpet call. Similar in appearance and operation to wingbone calls, the trumpet call produces a distinct sound that sets it apart from other calls on the market. Its uniqueness makes it especially effective in areas where turkeys have become wary of more common calls.

Unlike wingbones, which can vary in sound depending on the size and bone structure of the bird it came from, trumpet calls offer a more consistent sound due to their modern design.

“The trumpet is a great call for pressured turkeys,” said Zack Downs of Pittman Game Calls. “I always carry one with me in the turkey woods.”

Trough Calls: A Versatile Friction Call

One final call that drew attention was the trough call. A friction-based call similar to pot calls, the trough call features a narrow strip — typically made of slate, aluminum or copper — set within a wooden trough. Like pot calls, hunters can experiment with different strikers to create a variety of tones and pitches, making it a versatile addition to any turkey hunter’s gear.
