The proclamation highlights the tremendous value hunting and fishing bring to conservation, both across the nation and within Oregon. These time-honored traditions not only connect people to the land but also directly fund critical habitat and wildlife management efforts.
The proclamation reads, in part:
“…WHEREAS, through license surcharges, hunters provide funding to protect and restore habitat that Oregonians may enjoy these natural resources with more than 1.6 million acres of habitat restored through funding; and
WHEREAS, over 670,000 anglers and over 330,000 hunters recreate annually and through their participation provide over half of the biennial budget of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in support of its mission to sustain Oregon’s fish, wildlife and their habitats for future generations; and
WHEREAS, we believe in a future where this important work continues, and Oregon’s fish and wildlife thrive and provide abundant resources for current and future generations of Oregonians…”
Coming at the close of the National Wild Turkey Federation’s 2025 Conservation Week, the proclamation underscores the essential role hunters and anglers play in funding conservation, restoring habitat and sustaining abundant natural resources for all.
“Hunters and anglers are the backbone of conservation,” said Krista Modlin, NWTF district biologist for Oregon, Washington, California and Nevada. “Their license dollars and excise tax contributions make it possible to restore habitat, improve forest health and ensure clean water and thriving wildlife populations. This proclamation is a powerful reminder of the positive impact our sporting community makes every day.”
