Following a comprehensive review and ranking process, the Louisiana NWTF Board of Directors approved a total investment of $63,388 to advance NWTF’s mission across the state. Of that total, $51,188 was allocated toward on-the-ground conservation projects, $4,200 was dedicated to wild turkey research and $8,000 was approved for hunting heritage efforts, including Wheelin’ Sportsmen hunts designed to expand access to the outdoors.
Conservation project funding approved through this cycle will be matched with more than $221,500 in partner and grant contributions, representing a greater than 4-to-1 match rate and significantly amplifying the impact of NWTF’s investment on public lands.
“NWTF Louisiana is committed to increasing conservation efforts throughout the state, and that wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of our passionate volunteers, members and strong partnerships,” said Kacie Bauman, NWTF district biologist. “The Super Fund projects approved for 2026 will further our mission by conserving wild turkey habitat, supporting critical research and providing more public hunting opportunities for outdoorsmen and women across Louisiana.”

Funded projects focus on improving habitat conditions across several priority wildlife management areas through prescribed fire and targeted vegetation management. Work includes prescribed burning and fire lane establishment at Bodcau, Clear Creek, West Bay and Sabine wildlife management areas, as well as prescribed burning efforts at Lake Ramsey WMA. Additional funding supports openings management at Sherburne and Big Lake wildlife management areas, improving forest structure, promoting early successional habitat and enhancing conditions for wild turkeys and other wildlife.
Beyond habitat work, the Louisiana NWTF Super Fund investment also supports Wheelin’ Sportsmen hunts, helping deliver NWTF’s hunting heritage mission by expanding access, education and outdoor opportunities for participants across the state.
About the National Wild Turkey Federation
Since 1973, the National Wild Turkey Federation has invested over half a billion dollars into wildlife conservation and has positively impacted over 25 million acres of critical wildlife habitat. Since 2022, the NWTF has also invested over $2.3 million in critical wild turkey research that, when leveraged with partner contributions, has resulted in more than $22 million to guide the management of the wild turkey and to ensure sustainable populations. The organization continues to deliver its mission by working across boundaries on a landscape scale to deliver healthy forests and wildlife habitats, clean and abundant water, resilient communities and robust recreational opportunities. With the help of its dedicated members, partners and staff, the NWTF continues to unite a nation through the life-changing power of the outdoors.
