Review: TriStar Lever-Action .410

Combining the best of both worlds – the classic lever-action and the uniqueness of the .410 bore – TriStar’s LR94 shotgun is an all-around field gun to have on hand.

The LR94 lever-action .410, chambered in 2½ inches, is easy to handle (6.28 pounds) in the field for small game like squirrels and rabbits and presents a challenge for upland game shooting or sporting clays for advanced sport shooters.

For future outdoorsmen and women, it’s a great gun with limited recoil and understanding the need for proficiency, but would require some stock adjustment for fit. The smaller .410 is easy to handle with its 22- or 24-inch barrel length, and its modified choke throws a tight pattern inside 25 yards.

The shotgun comes equipped with standard rifle iron sights (front blade fixed sight and adjustable rear sight), as well as a firing pin block on the safety that allows the trigger to be pulled and the hammer to strike the firing pin without it hitting the primer. The lever-action is smooth but must be fully extended and closed to cycle rounds and prevent hang-ups – standard for lever-actions but something that may take muscle memory when first becoming acclimated to the lever-action style.

The LR94 also has some home defense applications in a pinch due to its easy maneuverability and fast cycling action. Not to mention, it’s easy on the eyes: The nickel-finished barrel (also available in a blued finish) and leather-wrapping around the lever make this one stand out in a crowd of popular .410s.

At around $800 or less, TriStar’s lever-action .410 is a quality addition to any gun vault.
