Birds, including wild turkeys, grouse and quail, can benefit from landowners who trap predators and keep those populations in check.
Fortunately, Probst said nest predators such as raccoons are easily trapped with dog-proof traps, which are easy to set, even for beginners.
Trapping is certainly not a new concept, as early settlers trapped furbearers for their pelts which were sold for many different uses. Unlike in our ancestor’s day, the activity is now heavily regulated and with the prices of furs and pelts being very low, the number of trappers has dramatically dropped. However, to help keep a balance in wildlife, trapping is an excellent tool in a land manager or landowner’s toolbox.
Probst believes in educating others in the art of trapping and has produced numerous videos and instructional videos and DVDs on the subject. He carries starter kits as well as more advanced traps through his website, northamericantrapper.com, as well as in his booth at the NWTF Convention and Sport Show, No. 349 (while supplies last).
