“Our chapter’s volunteers were talking not too long ago, and we decided we need to do something for the youth, or else our chapter will not survive,” said Chuck DuPont, NWTF Tri County Strutters chapter president. “Luckily, we have a dedicated group of volunteers that made our first JAKES Day event a success and exceeded all expectations.”

The event was recently held at the Wrentham Sportsman’s Club in Plainville and saw over 30 JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship) participate in the seven activity stations.

At the .22 rifle range, youth shot through over 5,000 rounds, which were donated to the event thanks to generous community supporters. Other stations also highlighted the kids’ enthusiasm and contributions from the community, including fly fishing, hunter skills, ax-throwing, craft and carpentry stations and not to mention the ice cream truck that was onsite and served sweets to all the participants and volunteers.

Additional sponsors included MassWildlife, NWTF Massachusetts State Chapter, Massachusetts Predator Hunters, Printmaster, Wrentham Sportsmen's Association, M/F Wildlife Removal, JW Masonry and Lorusso Heavy Equipment.

“This event shows what happens when the community rallies together for the common good,” said Carter Heath, NWTF regional director for New England. “The Massachusetts outdoors community and our volunteers have set the bar high for a first-time JAKES event. We are looking forward to continuing the momentum for next year.”
