Hunting Tip
More advice than tip: If you get the opportunity to hunt with an Appalachian turkey dog this fall, take it. The legendary John Byrne created the setter/pointer/Plott hound mix specifically to track turkey flocks. J.T. Byrne, son of the Appalachian Turkey Dog’s creator, points to the effectiveness of each breed. The Plott hound was notorious for barking while running raccoons, and the pointer and setter’s prey drive, stamina and flushing abilities added to the Frankenstein-like creation. “We didn’t invent the dog,” J.T. Byrne said. “We invented our dog.”

At eight weeks, his Appalachian turkey dogs learn the five-second hold. He teaches them to cross small creeks and fences — barriers they’ll face when scent tracking. He’ll hide behind an obstacle at 50 to 75 yards from a young trainee, forcing the young dog to find him. At five to six months, they head to the woods. Bottom line: When it comes to training his Appalachian turkey dogs, Byrne has 20 rules.

“The first 10 are patience, and the second 10 are patience,” he said.

RIO GRANDE SUBSPECIES

Hunting Tip
Rios like wide open spaces and tend to travel a good distance from their small woodlot they roost in to where they are feeding. Their food source may be anything from acorns to grass seeds to insects to a feed lot where a rancher may be feeding cattle for the winter. This could all change through the fall months depending on the harshness of the winter the birds are facing. The two main things I use in fall hunting to determine my success are roosting areas and food sources. I typically use a long box and a Jordan-style yelper for kee-keeing to get an adult hen to answer me. Be sure you bring a big bag of determination and patience as well. A nice pair of field glasses is always helpful. Spotting and stalking is a very rewarding way to kill your fall birds. Many eyes make for a tremendous challenge while hunting. And don’t forget, if and when you harvest a big hen or a grown poult, the wingbones can be made into a call to commemorate your hunt and harvest more birds. — Doug Herman, turkey hunting outfitte

MERRIAM’S SUBSPECIES

Hunting Tip
Merriam’s typically live in canyons with lots of big pines and hardwood bottoms to roost in, so finding the roost is a major key to your success in the fall woods. In places like Nebraska, the fall season starts in early September and ends at the end of January. The birds might face a gamut of weather conditions, and they will adapt accordingly with not only food but cover as well. That means you have to be able to adapt as a hunter. Calling turkeys in the fall can be tricky, and I use it more to locate than to get them to the gun, although, given the right circumstances, calling can be effective. Gobblers don’t gobble as much — if at all — in the fall, but they sometimes will on the limb once or twice. Don’t depend on it to happen. Usually in the morning, they will decide who is going to be the boss that day with a small skirmish, but it is short lived, as they are more intent on surviving than fighting. Hens and poults on the other hand will definitely let you know where they are at in the woods. More times than not, a boss hen will assemble the flock with a nice long assembly yelp sequence to make sure everyone is there before heading off to feed. At this time you will hear the poults kee-keeing and the jakes yelping with their broken gobbles, while everyone tries to locate mother and siblings. I’m not a big fan of decoys in the fall, as outsiders tend to be looked on with skepticism by the adults. It’s kind of a crapshoot, but I’ve seen it move the flock in the other direction more times than not. — Doug Herman, turkey hunting outfitter

OSCEOLA SUBSPECIES

Hunting Tip
Florida offers so many different types of terrain to hunt — from dry orange groves to flat wet swampy areas — the birds don’t care where they spend their day before roosting at night in the tall oak and pine trees.

At Okeechobee Outfitters, we will take four to six hunters during the fall, some of whom didn’t harvest their bird during the previous spring season. During the spring, we hunt traditionally by using a variety of calls and communicate to draw the bird in close enough to shoot; however in the fall we tend to do things a little different.

The most amazing part of the fall hunt is the morning fly down. They fly down at daybreak, and they fly back to roost just at dawn every evening. These two windows are the only time we get to see the Osceola gobblers together as a large flock because during the spring they tend to break up into small groups with the older birds setting off by themselves.

The fall season opens the first of November and goes through the end of December. In my opinion, December is the better time to hunt the Osceola. During this time, there is a short period that the Osceola will begin to gobble, mainly in the morning while on the roost just before flying down. When they hit the ground, there’s always a couple of birds that respond just like opening morning in the spring. They will respond to a turkey call as if it was March and April, which makes for an exciting fall Osceola turkey hunt.

We let the turkeys get on the ground for an hour or two and then bust them up. We then get into a setup and call the turkeys back together for a shot opportunity. Fall hunting is a lot of fun, especially Oceola turkeys in South Florida before Christmas.

Be prepared with all the right gear and equipment. Make sure your shotgun is patterned or your rifle is zeroed in. Last but not least: Be patient and safe! — Danny Santangelo, 25-year guide with Okeechobee Outfitters

Public Land Recommendation
Green Swamp WMA (Florida) — The NWTF, through the NWTF/FWC/FFS Cost-Share Program, has partnered with the Southwest Florida Water Management district over the last several years to mechanically treat over-grown saw palmetto within pine flatwoods, and then used prescribed fire to maintain the areas treated.
