2020 Fall Hunt Guide

The Fall Hunt Guide has always focused on the excitement of finding wild turkey flocks in the autumn and winter. The 2020 Fall Hunt Guide is no different, but it comes with an asterisk. You’ll find all the relevant season dates, bag limits and state wildlife agency contact information — and we encourage you to check regulations before hunting to ensure you are up-to-date on the laws wherever you’re hunting. Spring 2020, though, was unlike anything we’ve seen in recent years, thanks (or no thanks) to COVID-19, which affected many states in different ways. Understanding the effects of the pandemic this early is difficult, and much data is still being analyzed. We likely won’t know the exact impact this spring will have on the future of wild turkeys for several years, but this hunt guide includes spring harvest data and hunter numbers (where available) to get an early glimpse of how increased or decreased hunter and harvest figures may impact each state. Previous research has shown that increases in hunter effort result in more wild turkey harvests, and with the restrictions placed on workers, schools and the population, many states saw a surge in the number of turkey hunters in the field this past spring. Conversely, some states restricted nonresident permits to limit travel and may have seen a decrease in hunters and/or harvests. There are no definitive answers to draw at this point, but one thing is clear: The spring of 2020 will be impactful on wild turkey numbers for years to come. Enjoy your fall afield, and don’t take the wild turkey for granted. Each one is a sight to behold considering what it went through to survive to maturity. Be safe, practice responsible recreation and take care of our resources.

Pandemic Effects: Missouri

The number of turkeys harvested during the 2020 youth and regular spring turkey seasons in Missouri (41,461) was up 7% from the 2019 harvest total. This increase in turkey harvest is likely due to an increase in hunter participation. The number of unique turkey hunters in Missouri during the 2020 seasons (133,022) was 8% greater than the number of hunters who participated in the 2019 seasons. Resident and youth permit sales were up this year (25% and 24%, respectively, from 2019); however, there were 17% fewer nonresident permits sold in 2020 than in 2019. It is possible that school closures, work layoffs and the cancellation of many extra-curricular activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to folks having more time to participate in turkey hunting this spring. — Reina Tyl, Missouri Department of Conservation resource scientist
