4 Must-have Mobile Apps for the Modern Hunter

Times have changed, and the hunting and outdoor industry is adapting. The days of hunting without a smartphone in my pocket are long gone, and I know the same is true for many other hunters. There is too much power at my fingertips that can help provide a better and more productive hunting season.

A variety of hunting apps can help you map your property, explore new hunting opportunities, follow weather, learn vocalizations of your favorite game animal and much more.

Here are four of the hunting apps you should download and start using today.

HUNT App – onXmaps

Platform: iOS and Android

Description: The New Era of GPS - Use the HUNT App as a fully functioning GPS on your phone. View private and public land ownership, hunting units, roads and trails, real-time weather and much more. Turn your phone into a dedicated GPS with offline saving, tracking and more.

Cost: Free trial use, $29.99 per year for single state and $99.99 annual fee for all states.

Pros: The HUNT App is solving one of the biggest problems facing hunters today – access. As places to hunt become harder to find, apps like the one produced by onXmaps become more valuable. With access to parcel data in a majority of counties across all 50 states, it has never been easier to find public land nearby that you never knew existed. Also, you can see private landowner data and easily tract down the names of those you would need to speak with to ask permission. Once you find a place to hunt, the app allows you to map your tracks and waypoints so you can most effectively manage your property. Finally, the ability to cache maps and use the phone as a GPS ensures you will not unknowingly trespass on private property, even when you do not have a signal.

Cons – If you hunt more than one state, it can get somewhat pricey. However, the cost is a lot cheaper than the cost of a trespassing ticket. Not all the public land listed may be accessible for hunting, or it may have limited hunting opportunities. Check local regulations before you head into the field to ensure you are in compliance with state laws.

PointHunter – GotMyTag LLC

Platform – iOS and Android

Description - With one single push of a button and a little data, PointHunter keeps track of application deadlines and will provide reminders of those dates for more than 40 states. Draw results are available in 15 states. Users can access preference points anytime and anywhere for 13 states and make sure they do not miss application deadlines.

Cost – $4.99

Pros – This app can help you track your preference points for game species in numerous states. You will never miss a deadline for application, and you can forget about navigating difficult websites to find out your application status.

Cons – This app is most valuable to the western hunter who has to sometimes wait years to draw even a turkey tag. If you are hunting in the East or just hunting one state, it is probably not worth the download.

Gobble Map – Powderhook

Platform – iOS and Android

Description - Use Gobble Map to see reports of turkey activity in your area, view trends on an interactive heat map and track your own turkey hunting activity. Designed with privacy in mind, your exact location is never revealed. With the help of the expert biologists at the National Wild Turkey Federation, Gobble map brings turkey hunting to life on your phone.

Cost – FREE

Pros – Gobble Map is most well-known for its heat map display of turkey activity, but it can be used to view and comment on turkey observation and harvest reports. The app also has public land mapped out.

Cons – The heat map feature is driven by user-generated reports, making it less relevant in areas where there is not a high concentration of app users. Also, I would only recommend using the public land for reference as I am not sure how accurate the boundaries are. Same as other apps, make sure you check hunting regulations for mapped public land to ensure you are within the law.

ScoutLook Hunting & Weather – HuntLogix, LLC

Platform – iOS and Android

Description – ScoutLook Hunting is a map-based app that offers hunters pinpoint global weather forecasts and location management. Save unlimited hunting locations (treestands, blinds, trail cameras, etc.) to your account. Revisit your saved locations to plan future hunts and be in the right place at the right time.

Cost – FREE

Pros – This is a go-to app for monitoring weather condition, ensuring you pick the correct stand each time you hit the field. Check your ScentCone when hunting big game or your SetZone when hunting waterfowl. Also mark waypoints to help manage your property.

Cons – Data can be tough to load in areas that do not offer good signal strength. Though the phone’s GPS feature can be used to pinpoint the user’s location, there are no property boundaries on the maps. So it is best used only on private leases or land where boundaries are clearly marked.
